A hosted Weblate alternative where the source language is free

Weblate and Linguiqo agree on more than most: neither charges for seats, both put every feature in every plan, both run machine translation on your own keys and both keep data in the EU. The differences are in what is counted and in who runs the server.

Where Linguiqo is different

  • Linguiqo does not count the source language. The same catalogue is fewer billable units, and a private project fits the free plan while it is small.
  • Linguiqo is only hosted: there is no server to install, update or back up.
  • Linguiqo's cheapest paid plan is €9.90 a month for 10,000 slots.

When Weblate is the better fit

  • You want to run it yourself: Weblate is copyleft free software (GPLv3 or later) and self-hosting costs nothing.
  • Your repository is in Mercurial, or your team uses Gerrit or Gitea for review.
  • You want machine translation from a provider other than OpenAI or DeepL; Weblate connects to more than thirty.
  • Your project is public: Weblate's Libre plan hosts it for free.

Questions

Can I move a Weblate project to Linguiqo?

Weblate works from the files in your repository, so connect the same repository to Linguiqo and map the same files: PO, JSON, XLIFF, Android strings.xml, ARB, YAML and more. Plural forms and context come across in the formats that carry them.

Can I self-host Linguiqo?

No. Linguiqo is a hosted service, run in the EU. If self-hosting is a requirement, Weblate is the better fit.

Which machine translation does Linguiqo use?

OpenAI or DeepL, on your own key, on every plan. Without a key everything else works and no text is sent to any translation service.
